We'll be making a few more clips covering the history of Cakey Sportsman soon, but until then here's some background :)

*Matea Gluscevic (designer, owner, maker at Cakey Sportsman) has been an Artist and Maker since the beginning of time. She has a very broad creative history but were only going to talk about the Cakey Sportsman part here atm*

Cakey Sportsman surfaced somewhere around 2010 as a drawing of a "baby" made of cake. Obviously a baby made of cake would be called Cakey, and Sportsman seemed like an appropriately juxtapositional type of surname.

The drawing was lost (it was drawn on skin and washed off) but the name stuck. Matea ended up using the Cakey Sportsman alias as an artist name in various artworks and exhibitons that she was a part of for the following 8 or so years.

At some point around 2014 or so, Cakey Sportsman also turned into a cloth mask (very similar to Cakeys current face) that was worn to festivals and used to explore the idea of core identity and freedom within the self and society. Matea also used the alias to enter a body building competition (see the clip below).

It became apparent that the idea of Cakey Sportsman, and whatever form she took (alias, mask, puppet) was a vessel for creativity, as well as a symbol of social freedom and self expression.

With all those years of creative and expressive "weight" held within the name, Cakey Sportsman was Matea's obvious choice for naming her new all encompassing and expressive clothing and footwear brand.

Cakey Sportsman continues to be what she always has been; a symbol of self expression and social freedom - while now ALSO being the silent force of creativity behind the brand, offering an endless stream of ideas, inspiration and direction :)
